Deloitte reports that “exponential” technologies, including data automation tools such as Foxtrot RPA, are opening up significant areas of business opportunity. This is especially true in the broadcast industry where highly repetitive, manual processes still exist. To eliminate these mundane routines, media companies like Netflix are looking to Foxtrot RPA to develop a culture efficiency and productivity.

The upgrade of repetitive, broadcast industry processes helps these companies load their content on platforms faster, freeing their employees from old, inefficient workflows and bandwidth restrictions such as:

  • Transferring content contracts into rights management systems
  • Transcribing TV schedules
  • Managing various documents during content creation

Proliferation of Platforms

Like the search for the next piece of award-winning content, leading companies in the broadcast sector are constantly seeking to innovate and improve their practices and processes.

With the proliferation of the number of media platforms — mobile, web, satellite, terrestrial and cable, with different versions for the variants of end-user devices — companies in charge of content have taken a serious look at automation in order to deliver to those platforms in a timely manner. Consider that:

  • Last year, Netflix subscriber’s base grew 10.5 percent in the U.S. and nearly 48 percent internationally
  • Video-on-demand viewers are expected to increase 15.5 percent to 209 million by 2021

Automation and Media

Digital business leaders, including those in the broadcast industry, distinguish themselves from competitors in two ways, according to the McKinsey Global Institute: how they engage with clients and suppliers and how thoroughly their employees use digital tools in every aspect of their daily activities.

According to McKinsey’s Industry Digitization Index which measures each industry’s digital use and potential, the media industry is currently ranked second (behind IT). Media companies are performing near the top in all categories, including digital spending on workers, interactions, business processes and digitization of work.

There are three main areas where data automation software can be used today:

  • Extract, Transform, Load: Foxtrot vastly improves the speed and accuracy of inputting and transferring data from written forms into systems, including legacy systems that do not have robust APIs.
  • Process Automation: An automated employee moves data from spreadsheets and emails into operational tools, as well as content between systems.
  • Workflow Optimization: Data automation software can be used to collect operational metrics to boost analytics, which, in turn, optimizes future content performance.

In the increasingly complex world of broadcast media, content must be managed and delivered before consumers can be informed and entertained. Content is still king, but data automation software such as Foxtrot RPA is the new chariot of choice for more efficient internal flow and external delivery.
