Rumba 8 settings to stop scrolling screen

8/17/10

Applies to:  Foxtrot LE and Rumba 8

Summary

Foxtrot LE fails to run scripts that previously worked on older versions of Rumba.  Actions such as ‘Script Compare’ and ‘Screen Checks’ do not execute properly and control keys such as ‘Position Cursor’ or ‘Copy Data’ seem to not work when trying to create new actions.

Rumba 8 includes a feature called History Buffering.  This means that when the emulator advances from Screen 1 to Screen 2, Screen 1 is scrolled up and Screen 2 is appended to the bottom of the “scrolling” emulator page.

The emulator is adding more rows underneath Screen 1, adding Screen 2 to these new rows, and then scrolling Screen 2 into view.  The easiest way to know if this is occurring is to see if the emulator has a vertical scroll bar on the right-hand side.

Foxtrot is designed to work with a fixed number of rows and columns.  Anything BELOW that range of rows is not visible to LE.  This means that the settings in Rumba have to be adjusted to eliminate this scrolling effect, which will allow Foxtrot LE to work properly.

Resolution

1.  Click ‘Display’ on the ‘Options’ menu.  The following screen will appear:

2.      Set the ‘Lines in History Buffer’ to 0.  This tells the emulator you do NOT want to keep any rows from previous screens.  You may get a message saying that the history buffer will be cleared – you want to accept.

3.      Click ‘Apply’ then ‘OK’.

After this setting is changed, the vertical scroll bar on the right-hand side of the emulator disappears.  When Screen 2 is displayed, it COMPLETELY replaces Screen 1 thus allowing Foxtrot LE to work with Screen 2 as expected.

If a user wants to view their history, Rumba 8 has a button on the toolbar which has a tooltip that reads ‘Show History’.  Clicking this button switches the view of the emulator to the history (previous screens) and displays it to the user.  There is another button on the toolbar to go back to the live emulator screen.
